I'm hoping someone will know off the top of their head pertain to this problem.
Ok, I set up Samba (I'm pretty sure) properly. But just to make it easier and narrow down the problem, I changed the smb.conf to bare bones.
Here's a snip of it:
[global]
workgroup = homebase
guest account = pcguest
[scratch]
path = /scratch
guest ok = yes
guest only = yes
writeable = yes
browseable = yes
I can access any Windows Drives/Shares from the linux PC. I can see the Linux PC from the Network Neighborhood...I can access the Linux PC....
BUT when I go to access the share....keeps giving me \\computer\scratch is not accessible. You may not have the right permissions etc...contact your sys admin. Access is Denied.
I've tried all the combinations I could with settings under the share...I even chmod it to 777...I ran testparm and came out good. I can't understand....is it on the windows side?
Few tidbits: WinXP Pro for windows Fedora Core 1 for Linux No firewall between both PC's
What gives? I about to pull my hair out completely...arrrgh. And I don't wanna redo all the machines over...yuck...I just redid the Linux and that's what I dont understand.
HUGE props to the person that can lead me in the direction
This is crazy, but I have a home network with only windows computers sharing files. Anyway, the other day I wanted to use my laptop to connect to the shared files, etc.. I was connected via wifi. I coulldn't access the shares however. I did everything I knew to do and hda to reboot 3x 'cause XP sucks. Anyway.. I can see them, but can't access them and I got that same error. If I plug in an ethernet wire though, I can access them with no problem. Dunno what the deal is.
Thanks for the suggestion SirSlappy...all computers are connected by ethernet. All connected to a router and I can share files amongst the Windows PC all day long and from can pull files from the Windows machines to the Linux machine. I just figure why I cant access the Linux machine....I really hope the answer is out there otherwise looks like I got long days ahead of me redoing the machines...yuck!
Never used guest only access but one issue I've come across and tested is that the linux permissions on the share have to have root as the group owner otherwise Samba can't grant permissions.
Thank you all for responding!! I appreciate your time and effort into helping out.
I solved the issue...it was something on the windows side...how did I fix it?....I redid one of my Windows machines and voila....it worked the first time.
