WinXP-SUSE share same modem? How to?

In non-geek, layman language 1,2,3 - how can I get SUSE 10.1 to connect to the Internet through a dsl modem directly connected to WinXP machine? I get lost in configuration and am forever (?) a newbie?

Some modems have built in routers; if this one does you could just connect your SUSE machine to the modem along with the XP machine.

If the modem is just a modem, then your choices are to either purchase a router then connect the router to the modem and connect the computers to the router, or you could purchase a second ethernet card for the XP machine, then turn on the XP feature to "share the internet connection", and connect your SUSE machine to the XP machine using a crossover cable.

Those are your choices, pretty much. I don't know if you consider my language to be too geeky; I do believe that most people at this point know what a router is (and you can purchase one at Walmart or any office supply store for about $40). If you don't understand the choices given, ask again and I can spell it out a bit more.

Cool

In Linux YOU can use Samba. An inexpensive way to see the two computers is to use a cable and two Ethernet Cards. YOU have one, YOU need the second one. Try here...... www.pcsurplusonline.com and read the Free shipping statement and check for other sales or inventory offers. And here...www.outletpc.com They both sell, among others,...3COM PCI Ethernet Cards for around $5.00 each. Most Linux Distro's contain the drivers already. So plug'n play...happiness.

I have two etho cards, the one that came with WinXP and Netgear, one I purchased from Frye's. The two systems, WinXP and Suse 10.1, are installed in the same box. I have a wired LinkSys router and have each card connected to the router. But I still can't get Kmail to send/receive. My router's IP address is 192.168.1.100. Do I need to configure each card to reflect this address and get DHCP using static assignment? I'm lost! Please help. - mgl

Is this a dual boot system?
Or is it two separate machines?
