Winxp linked to Linux Linked to home network
I have a network running winXP it has a windows DHCP (sends out ip's to all computers) i have a computer in my room and i wanna hook up a linux box in my room as well.
i've put 2 network cards in the linux box and that hooks up to the network and then i wanna put my computer connecting to the linux box. i have a modem linked up to one of the pc's with XP sharing the internet, which i also want on my pc's in my room. (windows sends out ips like 192.168.0.1 <-- main pc with modem) i'm running mandrake 9.1 on my linux box some 1 help me ? do i need to put the linux box as a gateway or router? do i need dns ? step by step would really help me a lot (i'm a n00b at linux and good a XP) THanks heeps |

u might want to consider a router if you have broadband if not don't use DHCP try static and make sure you have SAMBA - you can get more info on it by going to www.google.com and type in Samba or try the man pages.
If you decide to keep DHCP still I would use a router to help both boxes although it is concivable to setup Linux as a router but until you get comfortable with Linux I would not advise. Linuxs rocks but you will have to learn to think different... |
