Hello!
Unfortunatelly we have lots of windo$ clients in our networt.
As we have to use the NETbios protocol we have a lot of broodcast in the network.
So here is my question:
1. What is the difference between a WINS and a DNS server ?
2. What is better to use for this problem a WINS server or DNS ?
3. Is it true that there can be problems with LINUX WINS Server and a WIN nt domane ?
thanx
OK,
In a really big Windoze network I actually do suggest an NT WINS simply because It's the only way I know of for sure that works.
To answer your first question a WINS server is like the DNS server on the Internet. It maps an IP address with a host-name. In the case of the NetBIOS protocol, it's a NetBIOS name instead of a DNS host-name.
Q #3: Don't know of any problems with it.(Never tried it. LOL)
What suggest is, if you use a DHCP server, tell the DHCP server to tell the Windoze clients to use DHCP for WINS resolution.
Save a Server, Save the Planet.
As i learned now i will install a wins - Server under linux
go form client to client and set the ip in the network properties (of the wins-server).
and so i will get less network traffic !
Is that right ?
Does anybody have experience with this?
