wins name resolution

Hello all,

I am not a Linux sys admin pro. But doing it out of interest. Here is my situation.

I have a Linux server (CentOS 5.5), running samba server and serving files. This Linux server is configured to get the IP Address dynamically from the router (which runs the DHCP server). This server identifies all the Windows machines by their names. All the Windows machines identify this server by its name as well. So far good.

Now I am trying to add another machine running Fedora 14. This machine does not identify the server (which is a Linux server, running samba server) by the name.

My efforts for getting this done:
1. Modified the nsswitch.conf to have the hosts line contain wins next to files as follows:
hosts: files wins mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns
2. Installed samba-winbind and started winbind service.

This did not solve the problem. Now,
3. I installed samba
4. Modified smb.conf to have
name resolve order = wins bcast host lmhosts
wins support = yes
in the globals section.
4. Started smb and nmb.

The above did not solve the problem either. And now

5. I stopped the winbind

and still no luck.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Additionally, do I need to install samba in the client Linux machine? Is winbind not enough for getting this problem sorted?

Please let me know if you need more clarification in this regard.

Thanks

Does the old system simply use hosts file or lmhosts to convert name to ip? Is there a wins server on the lan?

Hi Jefro

Thanks for your time.

The wins server is my samba server. So yes there is a wins server running on the LAN. I am not sure what do you mean by 'old system'. If I had not given the situation clearly in my original question here you go:

_____ Windows Client1
|
|
|_____ Windows Client 2
CentOS55 ___________ |
Server running -->| Router |<--|
samba server ----------- |_____ Windows Client 3
|
------ Fedora14 Client

Now I adding a Fedora14 machine to the client tree. This is where I find the problem. All of the above machines, including the CentOS server are getting the IP addresses dynamically from the router.

Please let me know if you need more information in this regard.

Thanks

Hi jefro,

The diagram I tried to include in my previous post seems to have been deformed by the formatting. But it should be able to be decoded. Please let me know if you cannot understand it.

Thanks
