Unhappy Windows Xp to Linux networking

Hi..I have a problem pinging my linux redhat box to my win xp box

win xp box

ip address:192.168.168.12
subnet mask:255.255.255.0
default gateway:192.168.168.10

Linux redhat box

ip address:192.168.168.11
subnet mask:255.255.255.0
default gateway:192.168.168.10

Firewalls for both win xp n linux box have been turned off.

Both systems are connected to a linksys ethernet router using straight cables. There are no internet connection as i just want to set up a local intranet.

I have tried to use samba but keep receiving a destination host unreachable message..What is wrong?I have checked all physical connection and my NIC cards are working fine..Need some help here..thanx

I'm a bit confused as to whether you mean you can ping or not.

Can the XP machine ping the Linksys? Can it ping the Linux machine?
Can the linux machine ping the Linksys? Can it ping the XP machine?

Once the network is working we can worry about Samba.

What model is the Linksys? Does it only have two ethernet ports? If it does, it might not have two ethernet ports at all, but rather one ethernet and one console port. Try switching the connections on the Linksys, and then see if Linux is able to ping, and XP is not.
