Question Windows XP access to Samba Server

New to Samba server. I have a Samba Server running on Redhat 9. I use the GUI tool to configure the server, and add user and the drive for access. I can see the linux server on my Windows XP machine “network neighborhood” under the workgroup. When I double clicked on it, I was asked to enter user name/password. I think I entered the correct user name and password (same for my linux and samba user), but the same pop-up came out again, asking me to enter user name and password. Anything I can check?

Many thanks in advance.

Jack

Make sure that each account on your linux box that you want to have access to samba has an entry in smbpasswd. If they dont then this may be what you are missing. I'm not sure how you would do this from the gui. You can try going to a command line and typing
Code:
#smbpasswd -a <account name>
You will prompted for a password.

Just having an account on the linux box doesn't allow access to the samba shares AFIAK.

Have you entered your passwords for samba? Samba has a seprate password
from the acutal system log in. You can add a password for a user by using the
smbpasswd command with the -a option followed by the user name. You'll be
prompted to enter a password for that user. If you've already done that you
could check to see if the user has access to that directory on the samba server.
