It's perfectly possible, install Samba, read the docs and you'll be up and running with it in no time:

Are you trying to browse files over the network on another comptuer that is running windows, or are you talking about reading your windows partition on a dual boot system?

Well as Kahless has asked you he is absolutely right if you are trying to mound your windows partition in the same computer then all you have to do is this

1. Log in as ROOT

2. create a dir => $ mkdir /mnt/vfat

3. Now you have to find out the partion no. your windows files are and you have to use this command

4. $ mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/vfat

5. here hda1 denotes C drive and u can find your partion in the harware browser if you are using GNOME.

6. Do not write this command from the /mnt/vfat directory

7. Now you can simply change your directry to /mnt/vfat to view all the files there.

8. And yes you have mount it everytime you log in... just a simple command.

Well if you are looking to mount drives on network running windows or other os then you have to configure and let me tell you i am also looking for that

Ok kjsubbu, now that you have told what ur requirements are, well i was unable to get ur question on the first hand,,,

Well this is what you should you do,

1. Make sure that smb is running on your system.

you can check this by typing this command
# service smb status

if the smb is running it will give you the pid on which it is running.

Now go the smb.conf file i hope you can find that and then in the Workgroup , give the name of the windows workgroup. Now scroll down and then see how to share the directories , there are many examples given in the smb.conf file.

The comments are given as # and the sentences following ; are the valid commands which can be given.

Ok now you can remove the ; and give the appropreate folder name and the share properties.

You can find additional help on the net about configuring your smb.conf file. Well it is very very lengthy and has many differnet configurations. Now you can make these changes and u should be up.

Well now just in the Nautilus browser. type this..

smb:///

this should give you the workgroup name,

Now in your windows box, you must open the network neighbourhood and you should see the name of your linux box( smb server) Now dont have to do anything with the windows, it will automatically detect your linux box, if you have configured everything right in the linux box.

Ok kjsubbu i hope i was of some help

Regards Tonan, do tell me how it went.
