Windows Network Denied Permission
 

I have a dual bot system with Ubuntu 7.04 & Windows XP installed on the same hard disk.

At home there are 2 other machines which have Windows installed on them. Before Ubuntu all 3 machines were part of a Windows Network and were able to share resources. However now when i boot in Windows, although i can see the other machines and retrieve their resources, they can not reach me or use the printer installed on this machine. When they try, they get a Windows prompt box requiring a user name & password.

Any help on why this is happening and how to solve it would be appreciated.

Windows networks are tricky... how did you set it up?
Have you designated one machine as a master browser, or is this negotiated at each new boot?

Windows network is still working without issues. Windows dedicated machines are able to see eachother and share resources. Only the machine that has both ubuntu & win xp installed on the same HDD is having the problem.

I boot the problem machine in Windows and try to access one of its shared documents from another PC which has Win XP only. But i get a user name & password prompt screen.

I have the feeling that Ubuntu changed some permission along the way during the install and now windows can not overwrite it.

Of course it is - it's changed. There are all kinds of things that could have caused this - depending on what kind of windows network you have.

Can you access the windows network from Ubuntu?

None of your windows data has been touched by the install process. (Assuming you defragged before resizing your drive?)

Windows networking can be very nice provided things don't change much. The simplest takes the form of a PTP network. But it could be one of the more complex ones, right up to an exchange network. I cannot tell what may have happened unless you tell me how it is set up.

It sounds like the KP computer has been de-registered with a controlling computer and it has asking to be re-authenticated. But I cannot be sure. Whatever, the request you see is not internal to the computer - it is coming from the computer hosting the "folder" you want to see.

Probably your best bet is to go through the process of adding the XP machine to the network all over again.

This was a simple home PTP network with no Domains or Servers, just allowing file sharing between a few machines.

Re-registering the PC or re-creating the network did not help either. I had a HDD image that was taken prior to UBUNTU installation. I Installed that image but the problem remained.

I also changed the attributes of the folder i tried to share, I gave FULL CONTROL to Everyone and even tried to add other PC's as a User. But again the password prompt box came up each time any other PC user tried to get access to this folder.

I hope you can enlighten me on why this might be the case.

That is expected - the problem does not exist on that computer.

Your network will have a master browser someplace. This is normal for the regular Windows PTP network. IIRC: the standard windows fix is to shut down all the computers, wait a bit, then power them up one at a time.

However: if any of these are XP-home machines, you will be restricted by your EULA. IIRC (again) you are limited to a network of three computers. Read your contracts, they're important.
