Windows client can't see long filenames on RH8.0 server

I just built RH8.0 server using Samba to serve up files on a vfat partition. Unlike the last server I built (same everything (?) ), this one shows my Windows (2k) client only the shortened file names and directories (lots of tilde~s). I tries to make sense of the Samba section on names but it lost me. My smb.conf files are substantially the same, so I'm baffled. Anybody got any ideas on this one? It's for a school and the kids will flip if they can't see filenames correctly. Thanks

it may have something to do with the file system you are serving it from.

can you see the full file names in a shell? and have you served it from a vfat partition before?

Both systems have vfat partitions being served by Linux to W2000. In fact, I built the first one to prototype the server for the second one before I took the active server out of service for 2 days.

I can check to see if a shell shows them correctly. I suspect it does not. Thanks for your help - I'm hoping to get this up and running before school ends!

Best,
Dale
