Short story:
New FC9 with SAMBA on it cannot access or be accessed by existing Windows network machines (name and IP methods both fail). Linux machine cannot access or ping other machines by WINS name.
Long Story:
I have a clean (as in brand new install from scratch) FC9 distro (downloaded 8/26/2008) installed on an older DELL Optiva machine with 1GB of DRAM and 40GB hard drive. FC9 has done a full 'update' and all packages seem to be the latest version. I have a functioning 5 node Windows network with a variety of Windows XP machines clustered around a Windows 2K server.
I am trying to introduce the Linux machine to the network and have been having problems getting the FC9 machine integrated.
- Using Windows workgroup 'HOMEBASE' (this is a home network).
- Have a single user (foo/bar) configured on all machines (including the linux machine).
- User is able to access all shared directories on any windows machine from any windows machine.
- Win2K server is the WINS server, LMB, DNS, and the DHCP server for the network.
- Flat (single subnet) network.
- ALL machines can ping each other using IP addresses.
- Windows machines can ping each other using WINS names.
- For purposes of this testing ALL firewalls (including SElinux) have been disabled (turned off, shot, etc.)
- I have created the samba user foo using the smbpasswd utility
