Windows 2000 Workstations on a Samba Domain

I am running a Samba domain for a network of windows 98 machines.
I would like to add some windows 2000 workstations onto the network however windows 2000 will not refuses to join the domain until I specify a username and password for a user and computer account.
Whats this about?
Is there anyway to get windows 2000 to cooperate with my existing network setup?

Join them first to your Samba NT Domain.

What I have tried is XP and I don't know how could this be done with 2000.

Root should be added in your /etc/samba/smbpasswd but make sure to give him a different password with his Unix password for security reason.

After joining, you should see "your2000hostname$:" appended in your /etc/passwd.

There should be add machine script in your smb.conf.
