win98 samba
hello,
i've just (re)installed samba.
from one win98 and win2k it works great exactly as expected. however, on another win98 box the share does not appear in network neighbourhood, and ...
smbclient -L simplicity
from the linux machine yields:
added interface ip=192.168.1.1 bcast=192.168.1.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
error connecting to 192.168.1.20:139 (Connection refused)
Connection to simplicity failed
what's perplexing to me is that it works fine from the other win98 machine.
various methods of "finding" the linux machine from windows explorer (map network drive etc.) aren't working, as are various options on the smbclient.
ideas?

Did you remember to enable file and print sharing? If not set you won't see the machine in net nieghborhood.

Well I had to run and check the other machines on the network to make sure, but file and print sharing isn't enabled on any of 98 clients here. IIRC it's just for sharing _from_ the client.
Can you ping the host?
Are you logging on as the same user?
Is any segment involved in the process firewalled?
Is smbd running? (just checking...)
Any 'deny' rules in your smb.conf?

do you mean on the win98 machine? yup, everyone sees everyone except these two. the broken win98 is running netbeui and ipx in addition to tcp/ip. will these interfere with samba?
>Can you ping the host?
yes, i can ping, i can putty, i can surf (masquaraded through the linux), but no smokin samba server in net neighbourhood.
>Are you logging on as the same user?
no, i will check this. from the other machine i can see the share but am not allowed to connect when i'm an unrecognised user.
if this solves it i am embarrassed but grateful.
>Is any segment involved in the process firewalled?
nope, a few machines, one hub, and linux connecting everything to the net, that's all.
>Is smbd running? (just checking...)
yes. happily, everything is going swimmingly on two other machines, a w2k and another win98(?!). : )
>Any 'deny' rules in your smb.conf?
when i testparm there is a blank for: hosts deny= . otherwise there are no other occurences of "deny" in the rest of the file or in my smb.conf file. anywhere else i should look?
what gets me is that it works so well everywhere else, and nothing at all on this one machine.
puzzled.

Hi,
clear all the protocols other than tcp/ip on all machines unless you dont really need them. Otherwise 3 "local master browsers" will be working on different hosts and you never know which browselist you have.

thanks alpha-wolf
i removed everything but tcp/ip on one adapter. it said "you network is not complete do you want to continue?". i said yes and upon a reboot, network neighbourhood had disappeared.
i put netbeui back on (rebooted) and we were back in business, and my samba share appeared!
now everything is working!!
perhaps those unused ipx protocols were interfering with samba somehow. maybe windows just needed a kick start.
is netbeui really necessary? or was what happened just a windoze hiccup?
cheers everyone

No,
netbeui is not necessary. Just tcp/ip on every host is just fine. The browsingmechanism of samba and windows is very complicated. Read all the stuff of samba. Start with the HOWTO and also read the man-page of smb.conf. then there is a /usr/doc/packages/samba/textdocs/BROWSING.txt in my SuSE distribution.
