Bear in mind, I'm a newbie, too. However, I have a 5 PC system running here (2 Linux, 3 WIndows) and I'm doing exactly what you're attempting. I really had NO problems at all sharing a Windows 98 printer. I assume you know how to set up file and print sharing under Windows98? Go to Control Panel, Network, Configuration tab, and click on File and Print Sharing. Then, under the Linux box (I assume you are using CUPS?), start the Print Manager, select VIEW, SHOW ALL, and pick your printer. If I remember correctly, the SHOW ALL will show all printers connected to your network. Click on the one you want and set up it's print queue accordingly. Try a CUPS test page to be sure and away you go!!

You DO have SAMBA configured to be part of your Windows Network, don't you?? If not, the printer won't show!

Good Luck!

I asume you have the printer connected to your win98 machine and want to send your printjobs from the unix machine to the shared windows printer.

Well, if you use kde, just add the printer using KControl and the printer setup. select smb printer and enter all requested information.
without kcontrol, you can use the cups web interface: http://localhost:631

(I you don't use cups, I'm sorry I can't help you...)

Florian

if you are using redhat or fedora core linux... printer can be installed using redhat-config-printer or system-config-printer ..

once it opens .. you can do it easily...everything is user friendly..

cheers
bye

Dear Fellows

Thanks for Replies

The acctuall situation is

win2000 server (domain name is "leisure")

win98 machine (machine name is "MSA") with shared printe (share name HP5L)

linux machine (machine name is "ISO") with samba installed

Both clients (linux and windows) are connected to win200 server.

Using samba i can view Linux client's file on windows 98 machine.

The only problem i m having that i want to send print to win98 machine from linux machine.

i tried this

in start menu of linux

System Tools --- > system settings ---> Printing

A printer configuration dialogue box appears

Click on new
A new printer wizard starts

click on forward

Enter Name of printer
Enter Short Description
Click on forward

Select Que type Drop down box

I selected Network Windows (SMB)

and both of my machines appear in box (linux and win98 client)

i clicked on win98 machine MSA

My shared printer appears in MSA and a dialogue box appears
dialogue box appears already having

Work group (nothing in this input box)
SERVER MSA
Share HP5L
User (nothing in this input box)
Password (nothing in this input box)

i dont know which user & password should enter here in this box ,
Is it my linux machine root password
Is it my win98 machine password (user for win98 created on win2000 server)

Is there any suggestion.

waiting for your replies.

Thanks

workgroup should be your domain name and user and pass is either an existing user on your win98 machine or try guest and no password.

workgroup is the workgroup in which your windows 98 (MSA) is located.. "leisure" here...
user and password is your windows 98 machine user and password ...not the linux

as your printing support has indeed nothing to do with your domain, and your linux box doesn't commuicate with the domain server to authenticate itself in order to print, you only have to create this user on your win98 box locally and not in the whole domain.

hth,
Flo
