Win2K sees linux, no access to share

I have a Win2k box which can see my linux box called \\server which runs RH 6.1.
When I click on the linux share in Windows explorer it says \\server\public is not accesible.
The thing is, I don't even have a /public directory on my linux box, so I don't know where that is coming from.
My smb.conf is simple, with only a global and a custom tag what just gives a path to my home directory and has it as browseable and writeable. Why does the share //server/public show up in Win2K when I A) don't even have that and B) it is not mentioned at al in my smb.conf file?

How can I get i to see my home directory which is being shared?

[global]
workgroup = home
os level = 64
preferred master = yes
hosts allow = 192.168.1. 127.

[homedir]
path = /home/myname
browseable = yes
writeable = yes

Thanks!

Hmm, no clue why he tries to acces that share, but sometimes samba behaves a little strange when configuration is not 100% ok...

let's start with your smb.conf I'm missing a few settings here:

[Global]

security = user

// Win2k uses encrypted passwords, so add this line
encrypt passwords = yes

// this line let's samba be your wins server on the workgroup which is considered a good idea
wins support = yes

Did you add your user in samba?

#smbadduser myuser
#smbpasswd myuser

Be aware that the myuser needs an account on the Win2k machine too (and you need to be logged in with it), else you won't be able to access the shares.

On the client side you need to add the wins server in you local area network settings

if nothing helps out take a look at your log files in /var/log/samba/
this might help too

So long

You should also think about the following options which will allow guest access:

guest ok = true
guest account = nobody
map to guest = Bad User

this will let all users that your linux box doesn't know access the samba shares with the privileges of nobody.

Thanks elch and steve. I will make a few corrections and try again tonight.

How do I add the wins server in my LAN settings in W2K?

Thanks!
