Win unable to find server
I am trying to network two PCs, one Linux, One Win 95. I'm using Linux as the DNS server. The network monitor on the Linux PC is showing data being transfered but I cannot see files from one PC on the other PC. Also the Windows PC gives me the error message "No domain server unable to validate password."
Any help welcome.
I'm new to this; let me know if more information is needed for a diagnosis!

Wow, all kinds of things could be up with this.
You are trying to see shares on the linux box from the 95 box?
Just some basics:
Can you ping the ip of the linux box and visa-versa?
Is this through a switch or is it a direct connection (with X-over cable)?
Is samba on?
If so, are they both in the same workgroup?
Is your samba config set up use encrypted passwords? (win95 cannot use them) Along these same lines, you will have to have a samba user with the same login name as your win95 login name. When trying to access a share in win95, win95 may ask for a password but will ONLY use the name you logged in as. If you logged into win95 (& win98 I believe) as "bob", the only user name you can use on a share is "bob".
Have you tried to browse the share with the IP address? Like:
\\###.###.###.###\
or
\\###.###.###.###\sharename
Just a couple of things to get this started.

Thanks for the help.
Pinging the IP address from Windows gives the message destination host unreachable. Pinging from Linux is timed out.
The connection is direct through a cable. The monitor shows activity when the Windows PC is booting up so I assume they are connected okay.
How can I check if Samba is on?
They are in the same Workgroup.
I've tried turning off encrypted passwords with the result that the Windows PC can now no longer even see itself in Network Neighbourhood!!
Browsing IP addresses is timed out.
Yours just begining,
Roger

The first thing you need to solve is to be able to ping each other. Two things I would check:
1 Find/buy a switch and plug both computers into it. Or buy a crossover cable, a strait through cable will not make a direct connection from one computer to another.
2. on the linux box type ifconfig at the command line. You should see "lo" and "eth0"-- If eth0 is missing, your nic is not set up on the linux box correctly.

I'm pretty sure it was a crossover cable I bought, but I no longer have the packaging.
eth0 and lo are both there.
