Will Home Network Changes Work?

Hello.

I'm looking at changing our home network from the current configuration (WinXP machine, Linux machine, and WinXP laptop -- laptop via wireless to switch, Linux machine directly to switch, WinXP machine from switch to cable modem as gateway). The new configuration would add another Linux machine to take over as internet gateway and be a fileserver. Before I start, I'd like to make sure everything will play nice together. If it is all workable, I'd appreciate a link (or two) to *good* info, aside from the Networking-HOWTO, to help me get it set up.

New machine:
AMD-K6 3D 167MHz Processor
128 MB RAM
6.4 GB HD (partitioned accordingly)
7.2 GB HD (currently my /dev/hdd; partitioned for file storage)
Two 3Com NICs (forget the model, but same as in my current machine)
Slackware 10.0-2.4.26 (because I'm comfortable with it)

Switch:
Link-Max LM-208 (currently connecting us to WinXP machine)

Wireless Access Point:
D-Link DWL-G700AP (currently in use for laptop to access network)

Cable Modem:
Motorola Surfboard SB4100 (currently using WinXP machine as gateway)

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Terje

I'm currently working on a Linux Home Server HOWTO .

It is still being written, but the first 7 chapters have basically reached first draft status, which is enough to get you connected as a secure gateway. It should eventually cover everything you need.

I've kept it as simple as I can, hope it can help.
