What type of network device are we talking about, in the first place?

Do you know if it is detected by the system and just not configured, or have you not gotten that far?

Check to make sure the lights on the nic card are loading up when loading into ubuntu. If they are not lighting up then you probably have a setting on the nic card that is stopping it from loading up. I had this happen when my realtek network card was getting taken over by windows. To solve this issue go into windows and open control panel. Once in control panel goto system => hardware => device manager => network adapters => double click on your ethernet card click on the advanced tab. Enable anything that has to do with wake after power off or any kind of power settings. This is what I did and it worked fine afterwards.
