why do my client PCs need to enter the DNS of the ISP to resolve names? help
my server is RH8
it uses dialup connection
hmmmm
why do the clients need to enter the DNS of the ISP to
be able to enter names instead of ip addresses?
can someone teach me how for the clients not to enter the DNS
of my ISP?
im just wondering.. the server doesn't have DNS but can ping names and ip addresses when connected to the internet..
Are you running a dhcp daemon on your server? If so, you would not have to worry about having to set this up on your client PC's. But exploration of /etc/resolv.conf on the client PC's (which are running dhcpcd to connect to the dhcp daemon) will reveal that they do have your ISP's DNS servers listed in them. In win2k/XP clients you can type "ipconfig" in a DOS prompt to view DNS server entries.
However, there might be a way to forward DNS requests via your server. You may be able to do this via a proxy server (e.g. squid + squidguard) running on your redhat box.
Sorry that this does not answer the "why" part of your question. But it attempts to give some alternatives.
hmmmmm so you mean
if i set my RH8 lancard on DHCP...
ill have no prob?
and ill just set the gateway and dns of my clients to the ip of the RH 8 machine?
You can use DHCPd to deliver DNS information (the IP of your ISP's DNS) automatically to your clients without having to enter it manually. If you point the clients at the IP of the RedHat machine for DNS, you will need to setup and configure BIND on that server, which isn't nessasary.
I have nt domain, a web mail, windows PCs and 4 PCs with Linux Red Hat 7.2, How I must to configure the linux PCs in order that work like a nt domain client, share data folders and mails between all PCs. The mail web server is a NT PC and works by 2000 port
