why cant linux and winXP ping each other ?

i have windowsXP networked to Knoppix 3.4 via crossover cable.

when i boot linux on both machines, the network performs perfectly.

HOWEVER... when i boot one of the machines (dual boot)
they cant even ping each other.

i used netcard config to set knoppix to:
Static IP: 192.168.0.2
Netmask : 255.255.255.0
Broadcast 192.168.0.255
Gateway 192.168.0.1
DNS: (my ISP DNS servers)

and the windows machine...
well, i have little to no controll over what windows does.
but it set itself to IP address 192.168.0.1 and
the network icon chaanged to show the cable IS plugged up.

so....
what are the possible reasons why this does not work ?
it should do !

You are asking for a Windows solution on a Linux forum
But as we have a Linux box on the other side of the cable ...

Right click on NetworkPlaces, Click Properties; Select the Ethernet Card, Click Properties; Select the Advanced Tab; Select Link Speed/Duplex Mode ... And from the drop down, select the appropriate speed / select auto.

its not strictly a windows question...
and the reason i ask it here... well...

a windows user obviously has very ittle knoledge of linux.. (if they did, they wouldnt be a windows user )

and most linux users, start of as windows users...reach the limitof the OS, and switch to linux

anyways.. i eventually fixed it.
it seems that in windows... the default LAN firewall is set soo high that it drops pings !

which i think is strange, as the default internet firewall, where all the evil people are is defaulted to allow all !

anyways.. all is well now.

Good .. so it was not the 10/100 auto-sense problem.
