Why cant I transfer mail from server to client?

Hi

I`ve installed postfix 2.1.1 and qpopper 4.0.5. I`m able to receive and send mails. The problem is that i can`t get mails from server with outlook but i can send with it. Also no errors are reporting in /var/log/maillog.

Does anyone know how to fix this??

Look into /var/log/messages if there are any error messages from qpopper.

(Qpopper never logs anything into /var/log/maillog; that file is only used by postfix, sendmail or other MTAs)

Can you telnet into the pop3 port of your server?

no, i can't, but it must be running..

When I send an e-mail from my hotmail account to my server, and views the mail by
$mail ,
it works just fine...

Fist I thought it might be something to do with firewall, but this is what it tells me when i'm using:
$iptables -L

Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source

Chian OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source

It seems that your firewall is disabled.

Maybe it is a startup problem with qpopper. I think qpopper should be started via the inetd (or xinetd?) daemon.

Is there a corresponding line in /etc/inetd.conf (or in /etc/xinetd.conf?).

yes there is, so it's kind of a mystery to me.

why can i recieve the mail and see it with $mail, when my client can't !........

my outlook prints the following error when i try to contact the server:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'gamerz.lir.dk', Server: '192.168.0.1', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

.... if this turns out to be impossible...
is there someone who can tell me if there's another good pop3 server available?

Qpopper is a good pop3 server, and it should work.

I did a google search on the error message, and most (if not all) reporting the same problem found that the firewall was the culprit.

Here is e.g. an older thread at this forum that dealt with the same problem:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...003/07/2/70751

Maybe it will help.

J_Szucs, thanx for your link it has helped me a lot!!!
Well the problem isnt quite over yet, but at least I think I know where the problem is.....

I tried to do the following:
$netstat -n -l -t
end got the response....

tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:111 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN

(there was nothing on port 110)
Can port 111 be the pop3???
In that case why?!

In my /etc/xinet.conf:

defaults
{
instances = 60
log_type = SYSLOG authpriv
log_on_success = HOST PID
log_on_failure = HOST
cps = 25 30
}
includedir /etc/xinetd.d

service pop3
{
port = 110
socket_type = stream
protocol = tcp
wait = no
user = root
server = /usr/sbin/popper
}

It should be listening on port 110 right?

ok, I'm pretty creeped now!!!
Well Im now 100% positivly sure that its not, running...

$nmap localhost

Starting nmap V 3.00 ( www.insecure.org/nmap/ )
Interesting ports on gamerz.lir.dk (127.0.0.1):
(the 1590 ports scanned but not shon bellow are in state: closed)
22/tcp open ssh
25/tcp open smtp
80/tcp open http
111/tcp open sunrpc
139/tcp open netbios-ssn
443/tcp open https
631/tcp open ipp
995/tcp open pop3s
1024/tcp open kdm
3128/tcp open squid-http
10000/tcp open snet-sensor-mgmt

my konklusion is NOT RUNNING!
How can i recieve the mails on the box, when its not runnig???

How do i start qpopper then.. it must be my configuration then, but is'nt it right?
You can see my /etc/xinetd.conf file, in the abow threat.

Talking

YES!!!!
I think its working now!!

1. Created a user named qpopper
2. Recompiled the program with the following configure:

$./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-popuid=qpopper --enable-standalone &&
$make &&
$make install

3. $popper start

4. $killall -HUP xinetd

Now when I run $nmap localhost the port110 comes up

Thank you guys!!
