Why a secondary DNS?

I have a small public webserver (slackware) that I use to host a forum for friends to use. I have 1 static IP address and only 1 router. I have bought a domain name and setup Bind. The problem is, I am unable to tell the registar that I only want to use this DNS without a secondary DNS. Why do I need a secondary DNS anyway? The DNS and Web server are on the same machine, so if the primary DNS goes down, the web server is most likely down too and a secondary DNS isn't going to help... How can I get around this?

Thanks,
Simon

I don't believe you can. The domain name will not work unless it has both.

Most registars have several DNS servers that you can use to "park" a domain name. You could try using one of those jus to meet the requirement for needing 2. But you usually can't configure them or point them to your IP. Alot of them now days are even providing fully user configurable DNS servers for free, which you configure through a web-based interface. Have a look around your registar's website to see if they offer anything you could use for the 2nd'ary DNS server.
