Try it this way..

whois -h 193.0.0.135 google.com

If it works, you need to adjust your dns methods..
You may also have the ports blocked by your ISP..

Ok, whois uses port 43

Install the programme tcp-traceroute

Then see how far you can connect until it stops.
What to do from there depends on why it stops..

According to its man page..

tcptraceroute -p 43 whois.ripe.net

If it shows * * * it means no replies came back, or your packets never got out.

The tcptraceroute programme had an internal error, prob bad use of ram..

If you built from sources, make sure it used the kernel headers from your running version, or find a Mandrake/Mandriva package already built, eg from rpmfind.net

I don't believe the whois program supports specifying a proxy server. At least the man pages for whois do not state you can specify a proxy server.

If all else fails, try the following website: www.whois.net

Coz whois doesn't use port 80, it is unlikely to be going through the proxy..

However, a wee bit of testing is needed to find the failure point.
From other threads, bruse is using a custom 2.4 kernel in a 2.6 version of Mandrake, so we need to eliminate some local problems while testing..

Thanks for the clarification. Wasn't aware of the other issues/threads.

I'll gladly take my leave from this thread now.
