I am trying to get Linux to work with a network that uses Windows9x and NT. I cannot ping any machine on the network. Is there something that I need to do with domains or what? I just want to get the TCP/IP networking to work.
Thanks

You might want to look into SAMBA. What is the error when you ping the Windows IP's? Can your Windows machines ping your Linux box? Does the Linux box have any network activity, like is it capable of getting on the Internet or anything? What happens if you type ifconfig at the command?

Linux cannot ping any Windows Machines and the Windows machines cannot ping the linux machine.
when I ping a windows machine it says that the destination is unreachable
when I ping the linux machine it gives a time out error
the linux machine only has a network card and it can ping it self

That is a good indication that your ethernet card is not working most likely or its configured improperly.
If you can give out the info on when you type ifconfig at the command.
Also, what type of ethernet card are you using for the Linux box? What Distro are you using currently?

I am using RedHat 7.0
Before I used it and was able to connect to a Win9x machine so the problem is how to make it work with WinNT I do know that this has been done but I don't know how.
I would be really glad if you could point me to some good howtos on connecting to WinNT.
Thanks

Hi there.
Use Trickykid's advice, if you can't ping from the Linux box, or to it, it doesn't sound like an NT problem.
I guess if you can't ping, you won't be able to share recourses.

I will post the ifconfig output and ipconfig output as soon as I can but now I am on vacation for two weeks.
As far as I have been able to tell, however, they should be on the same ip network but I will check that to make sure.
However, I have checked the ifconfig a while ago:
on one line it said that it was UP BROADCASTING RUNNING MULTICAST.
At home I have tried to recreate this problem unsuccessfully. The only thing that came close was by emplimting a firewall.
So does anyone know what RedHat uses as default firewall settings?
I'll get the other info as soon as possible.
Thanks
