When doing "ethtool eth0" it tells me that my supported link modes are 10/100/1000 but the advertised are only 10/100?
Can someone please tell me whats the problem?
PS: I'am running openSuse 10.3 and the network cable I'am using is CAT6 but it still connects with 100 Mbps only.
You are aware that everything from end to end has to be GigE in order for you to use GigE. If there is a switch in between that is not GigE then it will not work.
You can shut the autonegotiate off and set the speed the 1000 (see man ethtool). Something like: ethtool eth0 -s speed 1000 autoneg off
The computers are directly connected.
But there is something I learned now: If the driver tells you about supported links modes that does not really mean that the LAN card supports it.
The guy who sold me board said it is 1 Gig - now I checked at the manufactures homepage. It is really 100 Mbits only.
thanks for your support to all - but its false alarm.
I have picked up a lot of 3com GigE cards on Ebay for $15 (including shipping). A lot of companies are hurting for money and selling off their excess stock. Also when companies that have had GigE networks for a while updated their older computers they wound up with a ton of GigE cards (most new machines have it on the motherboard). Just make sure to check out the sellers reputation.
