What kind of dialup modem for Linux?

Can someone please give me some advice on what kind of dialup modem one should buy for Linux?

I am too far out in the country for DSL, and cable is not available for my neighborhood. I will someday consider satellite, but guess the up link will still be a dialup??

I have an external dialup modem, but it hangs up shortly after connecting to the internet, and I am aware that many Win-modems don't get along very well with Linux... can someone suggest what kind of modem to buy? thanks, David

Hi,
You can also try a pci hardmodem. They are supposed to connect fine.

Maybe this can help you:

If you want to go with a winmdem (they are cheap) then don't just go out and buy any plain old one, look on a site like the linmodems page (google for 'linux winmodems' or something)

I'm in the same situation as you are. I wouldn't bother with satellite if you want to play games and other stuff like that, because even though it has a big pipe (i.e., it can download stuff alot faster) it has MEGA slow latency. Imagine it: you have to send a signal from your computer, to your dish, to the satellite in space, to the ISP's reciever, and then to the internet, then back to your ISP, out into space, back to your dish and into your computer. So if you we're playing a game like Halo, it would look like you had an sweet connection from your POV, but in reality, when you shoot a guy, he's already 6 miles away from you. Also, since satellite technology is highly prone to errors, I'm sure you would get mega packetloss in a game.

Bottom line: good for mp3's and websites, bad for anything real-time, like games (maybe even chat?) At least where I am, its MAJORLY expenisve

I could really only suggest satellite to someone in antarctica, where they don't have dialup

Also, I use a U.S. Robotics internal controller based ISA modem. controller based means that all the work is done on the card, i.e. no drivers. (cept the standard one built into the kernel, but you don't have to worry about that) Everytime I mention it, people are like "ISA, ew thats old!" but it works GREAT. Just make sure you have an ISA slot first (longer than PCI)

In addition to the above check out our HCL here.

For a dial-up modem, personally I'd go for an external serial one - Linux provides built-in serial support so no need for additional drivers etc.

I've been using "Zoom" modems both internal PCI (DSP controller chip) and external serial with good service.
