Which machine isn't working? You say you've got CentOS on a laptop, RHEL4 on a desktop, and mention RHEL5 too.

Can you say which machine, with which hardware and which OS isn't working right???

And you might, while you are there, say something about your network (is it just the computer and an interface to the internet (what kind?) or is there more to it?) and something about what you are trying and what happens.

thanx for replying, for TB0ne :it is my laptop where i installed CentOS
5.2 64bit after installing RHEL 5 -
oracle distro and i found the same
problem.
for salasi: my NIC is "sis190"

i noticed some thing in Hardware Browser the Network devices section says that :
- selected device--> Silicon Integrated Systems[SiS] 191 Gigabit
Ethernet Adapter.
- driver ----------> sis190
- device ----------> /dev/peth0
any ideas?

I had the same problem with esprimo in Ubunto

The standard driver that came with the distribution does not seem to work well. For Ubunto the problem is solved using madwifi <http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=792158> Maybe a similar solution exists for your distribution.
