erm... "telnet" ;)

use ssh instead if possible.

chris21000 06-09-2003 05:34 AM

I want to telnet a windows system that has a telnet server...
How do I set up a ssh server or does it use the same thing or somthing:newbie:

acid_kewpie 06-09-2003 05:47 AM

no, ssh is not compatabile with telnet, you'd need an ssh server at the other end.

Question(and a dumb one at that): When you telnet into a windows box you get a dos prompt right?

Robert0380 06-09-2003 06:15 AM

that is a good question, i've never telneted to a windows box,
if you find out, let me know.

Dunno which ditro U R running....but if U need access to Windows box, U can run a Terminal Server on Windows box and then use "rdesktop" from Linux box to get the windows desktop exported onto Linux box...

Robert0380 06-10-2003 04:36 AM

i have never done it but i did some googling and found 2 websites:

1 is for cygwin the oher is for openssh + cygwin, the 1st link is where
i found the other 2 links:

http://www.networksimplicity.com/openssh/ the 1st link that contains links to the following:

http://www.cygwin.com/
and
http://tech.erdelynet.com/cygwin-sshd.html

the last one is the one that tells u how to setup the ssh server.

chris21000 06-10-2003 06:20 AM

acid_kewpie 06-10-2003 06:27 AM

"how do i set up an ssh server on the windows box?"

you get an ssh server for windows, and install it. can't really say much more than that....

"can u are can't u telnet with linux!"

no idea what that's meant to mean but i told you in the very very first post what the command was. it's just that telnet is BAD and should be avoided if possible.

Try Cygwin and open ssh server...The following link could be helpful.
