What is the practical use of ip aliase?


Dear friends,


I read about IP aliasing. but what is thr practical use of it to have one machin with many LAN ip?

Well it can help in a lot of ways..

Like when doing Clustering ..

If one of the nodes in the cluster goes down..
the other node can "alias" the others IP address and provide the service that the other machine did provide there by making it transparent to the end user..

Other uses are for making Gateways..
eg you have two internet connections from 2 different Service providers they give you different IP addresses.. you dont need two Nic cards .. you can just manage with one!

these are just a few places where it can help..
im pretty sure that there are tons of more places..
