What is the interface bond?

I am a newbie in Linux. I found that server in my working place which using redhat 5 have bond interfaces like bond0, bond1 and interfaces like eth0 and eth1 are without ip address. What is the usage of bond? Is it used for HA or teaming and Is it available on Redhat only?
Thank you

bond is the interface created by the bonding driver. It allows you to do several different things with networking. The driver is a stock part of the Linux kernel. The driver support several different modes and is most typically used for HA reasons I'd imagine.

It can also be used to increase throughput. But this requires that both ends are set up the same way, essentially using two pipes as one.
