What happens when a network cable is plugged in ?

all

I have a newbie question.

I need to know when I plug a network cable in , what daemons on the machine get activated.

What commands are run in the backgroud which starts broadcasting the machine to the world?

is it a simple "ifconfig eth0 up"?

I am running Redhat AS 3.0,

Thanx
Balaji./
