What do I need?

Just made the switch from xp to fedora and have very limited knowledge of linux. I wanted to know what I needed in order to enable my 3 computers (xp on other 2) to access each others files. I do have an old machine that I acquired that I can use as a server if that is what is needed. It has limited hd space so what distro I use is important. What packages would I need to use and If someone has any links to good documentation on how to do it would be very helpfull. Thank you.

Welcome to LQ.

To share files with windows machines you will need to install and configure samba:

It doesn't have to be on a seperate machine. It is just another service which will run on your linux box.
