What can I do with a VPN endpoint???

Would like to access my files over the internet w/o using remote desktop connection all the time. I was thinking I can get a Linksys Router w/ VPN endpoint. My Questions:
1) Do I need a server or software on a machine behind the VPN router? (I am using XP Pro machines)
2) Can I access shared files and printers that are on the internal network? (Can I access them as if they were local shares?)
3) Do I need a static IP to setup the login and authentication on the VPN router?

Thanks in Advance.
