What are possible reasons for getting "permission denied" by ssh?

as stated on the title. what are the reasons for getting permission denied on ssh??

APART FROM typing in wrong password, obviously...

-- what happened to me --

i connect two computers by ethernet cables via a router. last night ssh was working fine after reinstalling openssh. today, it stopped working properly again - i get "permission denied", not much of information. -v option gave useless infos. i checked on the net, but there are loads of rubbish on the net that are not really helpful.

---

could you all please post all the possible reasons you can think of? please...

Check /var/log/auth.log

You should see what went wrong.

hi thanks for the replies. i actually sorted out my problem

i checked the syslog of the host box, and that gave me a clue to the problem.

the trouble in my case was that my account had already been expired when i tried to access the host. so all i had to do was to change the account setting and extended the expiry date.

cheers

If you reinstall Linux on a computer, you will end up with a new private/public key pair in ~/.ssh. The public key won't match what is in the other hosts ~/.ssh/known_hosts entry for that computer. This will deny you access as well. Either backup the ~/.ssh/ directory before reinstalling or remove the entry in every other host. If you use ssh to connect to a physically remote computer, such as your colo web server, then make sure to backup & restore your ~/.ssh/ directory.
