what a router does when it recieves a packet from a different network

hello
every one . here im facing a problem . i was trying to fetch the IP address of any host within a network , so that i can get a hold of the network id of that network . this is bcoz i m in a different network the host and i want to enter into that network.
for this to be achive , what i did was , i formed a packet specifying the source IP and MAC same as that of mine and the destination MAC to be the MAC of the ACCESS POINT of the desired network(i.e, in which i want to enter ).but i specified the destination's IP as 0.0.0.0 .
as a result what is happening , i m able to send the packets but im not recieving any reply from any one of the desired network in which the ACCESS POINT was , not even ARP request is recived.

why is happening, could nyone plz help me out of this.according to me some host in that networking , in which ACCESS POINT was ,is discarding the packet .why is it so? could nyone plz suggest me ny way so that i can be able to achive my goals, i.e get the IP address fo the ACCESS POINT or any host in the network same as the ACCESS POINT.

thank you all in advance , plz reply me ,i m egarly waiting for some response .

You cannot do what you are trying to do, the way that you are trying to do it.
The IP 0.0.0.0 will be dropped as unroutable.
You also, should not specify the MAC of the access point, as this process will be taken care of by the router, and proxy arp.
Have you tried sniffing packets?

first of all thanks a lot for the suggestion. but still i m not clear with one thing . as in my situation im in some network , say A , now how can i sniff a packet which is comming form some other nework say B to a netwrok say C. according to my idea im not authenticated to sniff such a packet , even as much as i know Etheral (a packet sniffer)does'nt sniffs such packets.

thanks once again for the suggestion n plz reply me back . thank u in advance .

You cannot sniff the packets of a network on whose collision domain you do not reside. There is no way for you to sniff the packets of a remote network unless you have an agent installed to a machine that is connected to that segment. This could be done with a sniffer, or a program installed to that machine that could forward the packets to you. Such a program may exist, however, I am not aware of it. It would probably be easier to code it yourself (using something like perl! ).
