what's my IP


this is probably the dumbest question ever asked on this forum, but how to i find out what my ip is? is there a linux version of ipconfig or something?

hi,

open a console window.

the command 'route -n' will show you your IP routing table, from which you will be able to determine the IP address of the interface in question - eg. eth0

it's also useful in troubleshooting routing problems...

Make sure

Make sure you're the privileged user
(eg: root).

i see the gateway but no ethernet adapter addy?

Try ifconfig as root - that should give you all the info you need (also read 'man ifconfig' so you can limit or expand the info you get).

If you are looking for your External IP address, and have Internet connection, just go to http://www.whatismyip.com

Internal IP just do what Xavier said, do ifconfig eth0 (or whatever your Ethernet card is)
