Just to make sure of a few things.
Is there any error when you do modprobe command?
If not then the rest probalbly can be skipped.
Which kernel do you have?
Do you have the kernel-devel installed?
This is the rpm of the kernel source. Madwifi requires a copy of your current kernel source installed to compile madwifi.
Only reason I ask is you do make && make install. I would do make by itself. Also when you do the make install you are doing that one as root?
Module will located in your modules of matching kernel value. /lib/modules/2.6.16/net
Do these exist there. The 2.6.16 may differ on yours.
file:///lib/modules/2.6.16/net/ath_hal.ko
file:///lib/modules/2.6.16/net/ath_pci.ko
file:///lib/modules/2.6.16/net/ath_rate_sample.ko
aite guys, i have tryed to reinsert the card about 4 times and still nothing. my kernel is 2.6.12.2. i am using backtrack linux which is based off of slax. i checked to see if the modules are in /lib/modules/2.6.12.2/net and ath_hal.ko, ath_pci.ko, and ath_reate_sample.ko are in there along with 20 other modules. i used make && make install method and it didnt seem like any errors. PLEASE HELP. i need this to work by the end of this week. also, once i do get this to work, do i need to patch it to inject packets???

Never used that distro so I do not what the networking tools are like. Have you tried setting up the interface using the ifconfig and iwconfig commands?
when you plug in the card, one of the leds are supposed to blick once quickly every 2 secs or so. When you see that hardware is aware of the device. Then you modprobe ath_pci
