weird router/gtk-gnutella issues
 

I am not sure if this is the appropriate forum, but I figured I would give it a shot...

I have been using an SMC2404WBR wireless router for a few months, with never a hiccup. I am running redhat 8 and recently, I installed gtk-gnutella...

while using the gnutella client for the first time, I lost network connectivity. I figured time warner was having network issues, but when I went to ping my router, it failed... as it turns out, my router had crashed. hard. It continued to do so all night; the only fix being a reset...

based on other posts about SMC equipment, I figured something was wrong with my router. BUT having not run the gnutella client for several days, I haven't had the problem. on a hunch, I started the gnutella client tonight, and once again, crash...

I have been poking around for gnutella or other p2p worms that attack routers, but haven't come up with much. anyone care to take a shot? I am at a loss... :)

Does this only occur with the GTK-Gnutella client or also with other Gnutella clients? As far as I know the gnutella protocol only uses basic TCP/IP connections. So it would be kinda weird if your router would crash on that.
Anyways I was looking around on the net for all the features it includes and if I'm looking at the right one:

Then it's supposed to have stuff like Stateful Packet Inspection. And a bunch of other stuff. Is it possible to turn any of those off and see if it still crashes with that. In general they are good things to have on and do improve your security but it shouldn't be allowed to crash your router.

yeah, that is the correct router. I just poked around some on it's web interface, and it looks like the stateful packet inspection is an integral part of the firewall itself. so the only way to turn that off is to turn off the firewall functionality...

this is not something I would like to do permanently, but I could try it temporarily (just to see if that keeps the router from going down). if that turns out the be the case, I will know there is a problem with the router and I can start bugging SMC...

I was playing around with mldonkey, and guess what. my router crashed again! so that rules out issues potentially related to gtk-gnutella. also, when I disabled the firewall, I ran gtk-gnutella for about an hour without a problem. at this point, it really does sound like a router issue (probably firewall related). I will definately have to get in touch with SMC.

Have you found a solution??
 

I've set up a P133 as Linux-Download-Station (of course command line only :cool: ), which is intended to be online 24/7. Since I'm running Mldonkey on it, my SMC7008BR crashes more or less regularly.
I don't know, if disabling Gnutella and G2 in Mldonkey helps, actually I'm testing on this. I also don't want to disable the firewall, since there are also Windows-PC's in the internal network and due to the current worm-affairs I'm afraid that there problems could emerge. Any suggestions???
