Weird internet slowdowns with Suse 9.0

I'm experianceing some very odd slow internet issues, most notable during web browsing. Seems like I'll attempt to open a site and it takes a considerably long amount of time to start loading the page. It basically stays at "resolving host" for too long.. maybe 15, 20 seconds sometimes, then begins to load the page like normal. Sometimes longer. I'm using a linksys router, and my roomates who also use it don't seem to be having issues. I turned off all the port fowarding thinking that may have had something to do with it but appearenlty it did not. Even released / renewed the router's IP address.

So a DNS issue perhaps? It stays at resolving host the longest. Anyone got any ideas? I've done internet support for a while, but as you can imagine 99.999% of the time I troubleshoot macs or windows and I just don't know a whole lot when it comes to process of elimination with a linux box. Usually it just works - standard DHCP and TCP/IP

I'm using mozilla firefox, and somtimes I also experiance slowdowns loading the news feeds into evolution.

Oh, and the suse 9.0 firewall is off.

Slow WWW Browsing with Suse 9.0

Hi,
Same problem for me. Even with a 640 adsl pppoe connection,k when browsing site, mozilla 1.4 takes at least 30-40 seconds to resolve host.
I notice this only with suse 9, i tried on my laptop with other distros and they were quite faster on browsing.
Suse 9.0 is currently installed on pIII 500 box

bye

DSL here, but don't experience the slowdown. Seems to me that 15 seconds is the timeout on the
first DNS server, then it goes to the second DNS server and it works. What is in your
/etc/resolv.conf?

Try putting a # in front of the first nameserver listing, see if that has an affect. (You need to be root)

as i'm a newbie, you meant that i need to edit /etc/resolv.conf and put # in front of the first nameserver? correct?

Yes, it would look like this after you are done

#nameserver 216.177.160.35
nameserver 216.177.160.36

Well, the fact that it made any difference is good at identifying the problem. What are the DNS servers that the Windows machines use, and in which order? Could be they are more 'fresh' than the ones on the Linux box?

Took me a while to get back. I checked out the resolv.conf file, and looked up the DNS numbers of my ISP. They did change to new ones recently, but the resolv.conf file shows the new ones. In my situation, putting '#' in front of the first one didn't seem to have nay effect.

Doesn't seem like it is a DNS problem then. When you do an
nslookup, say for
www.google.com
it comes back right away?

If not DNS, then I have no real idea. As root,
tail -f /var/log/messages
see if you are getting firewall hits or error messages? I know that unless I open my firewall so that my mail server can icmp me, it won't load at all.
Could it be you have it set up to authenticate on each access, or every couple of minutes?

SuSE 9.0 & Name Server Resolving

Hi,

I also have noticed this when using SuSE 9.0. I have recently moved to SuSE 9.0 for the hardware support. When i am browsing using XP through the same internet connection dlink wireless router (linux box is plugged in directly). I have tried what you guys said and it didnt really have a lot of affect. SuSE firewall is not activated.

Has anyone managed to get any further with this?

I am also using Mozilla Firefox 0.8

EDIT---------------

Sorted..... Changed the nameservers that i was using and it all seems to be ok, just changed the name servers in the /etc/resolv.conf as stated above. LQ points me in the right direction again :

I did an nslookup to google.com, and it came back pretty fast. I then proceeded to go to www.google.com in my browser, and man, it did the same problem - stayed at resolving host for too long, and finally loaded the page. Weird! I wonder what's going on.

The other wierd things is that it spurts. Right now for instance, it works great. No slowdowns. Half the time lately, it has the slowdowns. It seems like they are even taking longer too. Like I said before, I looked up my ISP's latest DNS numbers from their official site, and the newest ones show up in my resolv.conf. The thing is though, when the problem comes up, I noticed earlier that pinging google.com takes a while, but pinging google's IP address seems to work just fine. So it does appear to be a DNS issue in some way. Anyhow, I hope this helps.

Interesting... I think I may have solved the problem... I turned on the suse firewall, and I haven't really noticed the issue since. Wow. Think someone was getting through the NAT firewall and onto my machine? I had a bunch of ports forwarded for a while, including those for VPN (note, I wasn't always running the server).

I recently had this same problem with SuSE 9.1. It took a long time for the internet browser to resolve the host but when it found the host it downloaded everything fast.

I found the answer here, Solution Source. To get my internet working fast I had to mess with /etc/modprobe.conf

Change the line: alias net-pf-10 ipv6
To: alias net-pf-10 off

Comment out: alias sit0 ipv6

Hope this helps.

Cool Look up this problem WRT ipv6 and disabling

Not entirely true. Solutions for disabling ipv6 vary between 9.0 and 9.1. It seems that your answer is more along the lines of the 9.0 solution.

The 9.1 solution is an edit that can be found via this link:

http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/1...illa_ipv6.html

Disabling ipv6

Check out the exact verbage and file to be edited. I did this solution for 9.1 and it improved speed by about 70-80 percent.

Hope this helps!
