weird DNS problem...

How does this happen?

Code:
[root@my-server ~]# ping -c 1 www.google.com
PING www.google.com (173.194.70.105) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from fa-in-f105.1e100.net (173.194.70.105): icmp_req=1 ttl=41 time=132 ms

--- www.google.com ping statistics ---
1 packets transmitted, 1 received, 0% packet loss, time 0ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 132.457/132.457/132.457/0.000 ms

[root@my-server ~]# ping -c 1 pop.mail.yahoo.com
PING pop.mail.yahoo.com (67.215.65.132) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from hit-nxdomain.opendns.com (67.215.65.132): icmp_req=1 ttl=54 time=93.7 ms

--- pop.mail.yahoo.com ping statistics ---
1 packets transmitted, 1 received, 0% packet loss, time 0ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 93.770/93.770/93.770/0.000 ms
Consequence of this is that pop getmail constantly fails...

Using wicd, wired with fixed IP fixed DNS behind a Billion BiPAC 7800N router.
this was working until fairly recently. I have changed something starting with hostname, then DNS on the router (thinking VirginMedia was redirecting DNS calls), finally DHCP with fixed DNS on the local machine then fixed IP and DNS on the local machine. (The system is headless, in the loft, so when network connectivity is lost I need it to pick up again hence wicd)

my-server and mydomain are anonymous-ised

Code:
[root@my-server ~]# hostname
my-server.mydomain.co.uk
...and WTF is all this mess?...

Code:
[root@my-server ~]# cat /etc/hosts
# hostname my-athlon-fedora added to /etc/hosts by anaconda
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain my-server localhost.localdomain localhost my-server
192.168.55.4 my-server.mydomain.co.uk my-server
::1     localhost.localdomain   my-server      localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6      localhost       my-server

you've really not described what you're problem IS.... but I see that opendns is not resolving that yahoo mail server address correctly? Seems like it must be a problem at the opendns end, maybe you're using some failing DNS server IP? doing a dig for that yahoo fwdn against a 208.67.222.222 (opendns) it works just fine. if I request a knowingly invlaid fqdn though, I get the same response as you did.

and that "mess" is a hosts file. It looks fine to me.

... Is the RIGHT answer!.

I changed the DNS entries on my router and the static IP configuration to 8.8.8.8, 8.8.8.4 and the ping resolves correctly!.

Thanks to acid_kewpie for your awesomely fast reply.
