Actually, you'd be better off using rsync over ssh.

Try:
rsync -avz -e ssh /path/to/directory user@redhatbox:/path/to/empty/drive

Rsync is definitely the right choice here as it will save permissions (-a) and compress (-z) the individual files in order to save you some bandwidth as well as working over a secure connection (-e).
