webserver failover

Hello happy hackers,

I'm planning to setup somekind of failover for my webserver. I have read som tutorials about heartbeat at http://www.linux-ha.org/Heartbeat but still have a question.

Let's say I have 2 servers, the master and the slave. Is it possible that I put the slave on another network? What happens if the whole network is down for the master? Then how can the traffic be routed to the slave? Don't really understand how to prevent a major network failure.

a heartbeat is for two machines on a local subnet. if you wish to failover across different networks you would normally have a dedicated load balancer or such sitting infront of both devices. we use F5 boxes for these, but as they cost 50,000 each i'd guess that wasn't an option you can actually turn apache itself into a fairly good load balancer which an handle the resilience for you. how you then make that front end apache resilient is another issue.
