web hosting with slackware 8.1

So far i have mannaged to make the computer host a simple test web page

when i type its local ip address into a computer on the network (on either win32 or *nix) it displayes the test page (YAY)

the BIG question now is, how do i stick this onto the internet?

do i need to register a domain, or can i make a domain using slack 8.1?

BTW: i am using apache, to get the web hosing to work :)

depends what architecture you have on your network i relation to internet connectivity doesn't it? as you've not told us anythign about that, there's no definitive answer. but either you would port forward an external firewall to your internal server, or an existing web server would act a s a proxy for it, redirecting onward for a certain address.

ok, the box in question, is an old PII (223mHz) running slackware 8.1

the ISP is supanet (www.supanet.com)

i am running the internet connection through a belkin F5D7632-4 router, the ip for the router (local is 192.168.2.1 and the computer's local ip is 192.168.2.27)

when i type 192.168.2.27 into the address bar of any machine on the network, it comes up with my test page :D (so it seems the host is ready, but it just needs connecting to the internet)

hope this helps :D

ok.... you need to forward port 80 at your broadband/swtich/router to your internal ip of the host. now... do you plan to use your own DNS Name servers or does that matter..... it seems you might be kinda new at this... so you should probably just register a domain through godaddy.com or whatever and let it be parked on thair nameservers.... and then use their URL redirect to point it to your ip.... you can also goto places like dyndns.org and register a free dynamic address and have your linux box ipdate the ip... it really depends on how you want it setup.

Britten gave good advice in terms of DNS and having your router's port 80 open and sending all requests of that port to your Linux box. You ALSO will need to get your official public IP...go to whatismyip.com to get your real IP. Your 192.168.... address is the address on your private LAN, not your actual IP address. Also, does your ISP allow web servers to be run? Is this for a business or something to mess around with?

Ian_Hawdon 11-28-2005 12:46 PM

at the moment it is just something to mess around with, but i hope to host stuff for the s1mp3 project on it (http://s1mp3.secret.com.br is its main page!)

I am new to this :D :newbie:

when i type my ip address as shown in whatsmyip.com it comes up with my router setup page!!!

will this affect my web server?

BTW: i have forwared port 80 on the routers vertual server page (port 80 for 192.168.2.27)

It it possable to get a free domin name (either by setting it up myself using my own DNS or do i have to pay for it?)

What do i do next?

Britten 11-28-2005 01:05 PM

the only thing free you could get is a free subdomain from dyndns.org or some other free dns hosting place.

as far as typing in your routers external ip address... make sure you have remote adminstration turned off in your router. and try again... if you have it off and 80 forwarded to the linux box it should work...

Ian_Hawdon 11-28-2005 01:13 PM

yeah, you'd think! :D

remote administration is off, but it is still showing the same belkin page!

Ian_Hawdon 11-28-2005 01:59 PM

update, it is working

the only resion why it was comming up with belkin here is because the belkin is set up to go to local pc's on the net work :D

thanks :D

are you a coder on your project? it looks interesting

Ian_Hawdon 11-29-2005 08:45 AM

Yes, i am an admin, (in all areas :D)

our aim is to make better firmware for the player :D
