Web filtering with a router
I have two computers connected to the internet through a Linksys router, which is connected to the high speed cable modem.
One computer has Windows XP as the O.S, the other computer has SuSE 9.2 as it O.S. Both computers have no problems accessing the internet.
On the Windows computer, I downloaded and installed NetVeda Safety.Net web filtering software. It installed with no problems, and filtering was almost automatic.
On the SuSE computer, I tried DansGuardian and SquidGuard (in conjunction with Squid) with no luck. I got Squid to start at boot (with no errors,) and DansGuardian is also running after boot, but no filtering is happeneing. I looked at “How To's” on all three softwares (DansGuardian, SquidGuard, and Squid) with no luck. (I think I followed the “How To's” correctly.)
I searched the internet on possible ways of getting web filtering to work on a linux system, and all I could find was that I had to have another computer as a dedicated linux box to act as the router for the other two computers. Or in other words, (at least the way that I am interpreting all of these “How To's,”) I would have to remove my Linksys router and replace it with a third computer (to act as a dedicated linux box.) This third computer would act as the router for the two other computers.
Is my assumption right, or is there a way to get Dansguardian or SquidGuard to work on my SuSE box with the Linksys router? Is there a “How To” on how to do this by configuring squid and/or the filtering software, so as to work with my Linksys router? I would like the two computers to be able to act indipendently (do not have to have both computers on to serf the internet.) As I said, the web filter on the Windows computer is working fine with the router.
Any help would be much appreciated, and btw, I'm still a linux newbie for the most part. Thank you.
