I can't help, but I know there is another thread here in which the poster had the same issue, but I'm not sure what distro was involved. I tried searching for it, but I couldn't find the right keywords.
Have you tried using a different browser to see whether this is a Firefox issue or something larger?
It's been several years since I last used Ubuntu--they lost me with Unity--but it used to include Epiphany, the old Gnome browser. Otherwise, you could try installing Opera or Konqueror (the KDE browser/file manager) and testing with it.

If you notice. Both are Firefox. I don't run Firefox in my Ubuntu 14.04 minimal install
but run a static Seamonkey .bz2 downloaded from Seamonkeys site instead.
Backup browser for me is UZBL.
