Unhappy want to start command line from telnet


ya in my college they have installed redhat 7.2 and they are giving us access via telnet they are not providing us a gnome only login promp will come and via telnet we have to login in that system so now at my office i had installed redhat 7.2 and 4 ports are open on that system ftp,httpd,telent so can u tell me from a windows 98 how can i start my telnet and then i can do shell scripting in it

Start --> Run --> telnet <IP address> --> click OK

Unhappy it is asking for username password

Dear it is working thanking for ur help it is connected but when it asking for username and password and i am giving my password and also root's it will shows me that login fail so what is the meaning of this thing what to do to get login in

You can't login a root through telnet even if you type in the correct root password. I don't recommend sending the root password over telnet, though.

Ask the computer's administrator to give you a login and a password.

Angry ya it's true but tell me how to do it

even i know that i need a telnlet username and password even i had installed that linux so i have to solve it so please provide me help and in usermanger which group and properties i have to set

Telnet

You don't have to create any special telnet account. Any user (not root) account will do. Redhat should hae prompted you to create a user account during installation.

Be aware though, that Windows telnet is seriously broken and many things just don't work. I suggest downloading putty (which is an excellent telnet *and* ssh client for Windows). It works just as well as unix telnet.
