Oh I forgot to tell you to restart samba after you made those changes (/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb restart).
I believe the problem is none of the computers on your network are acting as a domain/local master (thus the missing entries on your smbclient output). The changes you made should turn your linux box into the master for the workgroup (once it's restarted).
Ok....
I started to play with the network a lil bit more seriously.... (lol)
Now I got a lil forward:
from the other computers (now I have a laptop too) I can see mine in the Network neighborhood, but I can't browse it (it asks me for a password for \\DARKNESS\IPC$, which I never set and I don't even know what IPC$ is).
From my Linux, I can browse the others only if I mount them to a folder, but I cannot browse as a network with Konqueror (it always tell me 'cannot connect to host localhost').
I'm going to do what you asked to do, but there are some things that I'd like to say.
1 - I found a wizard in Mandrake Linux that configured everything for me and it looks working!! I can from Windows 98 connect to a folder in Linux.... this is a great thing!
2 - I'd like to know: is it possible to browse the W98 computer from Linux with konqueror browsing the network or I have to mount the various drives in the network on a specific folder and browse it?
3 - I found another application in Linux that allows me to browse the W98 computers. It is called Xsmbrowser. It works, but, still, what I am trying to do is just open konqueror and go to browse my network and find the other two computers.
Nothing... I can see the other computers with Linneighborhood, mounting their harddrives or with xsmbrowser, but still I can't browse them as a network.... is it possible in some ways? (if it's not, I'll give up)
