I have no idea about your setup (it's not in there anyway) so.....
just an idea:
FTP uses 2 separate ports groups for usage.
a connection port and a data port.
most times this is respectively 21/20.
If you change the port, it's most likely that it just only changed the connection port.
Thus, if you changed the firewall ports too, one could not use port 20 for data exchange.
You could however change on which ports the ftpd may use.
(incl. data port)
if you set it both to the same port, you should do fine (in Proftpd this is the case anyway, but i don't think that it's only daemon specific to configure this)
