vsftp very slow

i have installed vsftp in two machines. One is in standalone mode and the other is using xinetd. On both machines, the intial commands are always very slow. They take a long time to execute. The transfers themselves are not slow, but the initial time that is taking to run the commands is killing me. What can I do to cut down on the time that it takes to make the first connection/change directories for the first time?

I'm a newbie in the linux world trying to manage.

I have the exact same problem. I've tried messing up vsftpd.conf so many times usually ending up with not being able to run vsftpd. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated since I'm getting rather frustrated.

I'm using Fedora and running vsftpd as standalone

regards Eggert

I just found out the problem only occurred in some ftp clients but not other.

I was trying to use ftp eplorer on win XP but that is terribly slow on initial command. Tried command promt ftp client and another gui client on win and both worked like a charm.

But, I'd like others to be able to connect to my server, so ftp working with all client would be preferred. If anyone has suggestions or ideas what could be causing these problems for some clients but not others would be great.

thx in advance
Eggert
