VPN or Application Server Help/?'s

I have a piece of windows software that I would like to run on a Linux Server....Basically I have two offices in different locations...I want the WS's (WindowsXP, 2000, 98) to be able to connect to the software on the server so I dont have to tote databases or import/export stuff to keep each office up to date...Is this possible using a VPN..Do I need multiple copies of the software for each WS that would connect? I had someone tell me they have an Application Server where they only have ONE instance of the software installed and each client can connect and use the software...that doesnt make much sense as there is only one version of this particular software...The only other way I can think of doing this is using the software to connect to the information that is stored on the server...in other words setup a SAMBA deal where the WS's use the information on the server...I have no idea...just looking for some pointers, jumping off point

this all totally depends on what this mythical piece of software is.. we naturally have no idea how it works, and what is required of it... why do you even think it will run on linux??
